GameCityNights Season 3 Episode 3 featuring Dan Pinchbeck, researcher and senior games lecturer at University of Portsmouth AND the founder of thechineseroom, creators of the brilliant and hugely successful title, Dear Esther.

Dan delivers a talk entitled “How to accidentally make an independent game studio and have a hit game without having much of a plan to speak of.”

Dear Esther is an experimental, first person adventure title which tackles new narrative devices in games. Originally created as a Half Life 2 mod, thanks to backing from the Indie Fund, it launched as a full title on Steam and recouped the money in less than SIX HOURS! With over 16,000 sales on day one, it seems this experiment has paid off.

The headliners for GameCityNights Season 3 Episode 4! Mike Bithell & Andrew Smith!

Is GameCity hip? Are we still cool? Down with the kids? We thought circles is where it was at; Pac Man, Super Monkey Ball, Mario’s belly. Apparently we were utterly wrong, and in 2012, the right angle is the ONLY angle, people. Enter two of the hippest indie developers to teach us the error of our ways…

Mike Bithell, [Thomas Was Alone], and Andrew Smith [Spilt Milk Studio - Smash The Block] will headline GameCityNights Season 3 Episode 4, on April 26, from 6pm. Bringing together two of Britain’s best known (maybe) and best loved (pushing it a little) indie developers to see who makes the best game featuring blocks, attendees will be get to grips with Bithell and Smith’s latest works, their course through the industry and other treats, including a step-by-step guide to April Fools Day pranks and effective papercraft marketing.

Andrew Smith said,

“GameCityNights is like a bastion of insightful, exciting and galvanising videogame culture, and I’m honoured to be invited to contribute. I’m really looking forward to giving people a bit of insight into what kind of career decisions meant that one mad Englishman who can’t code decided to go it alone as an indie. Foolhardy, yes, but was it worthwhile? While attempting to find out the answer to that question, I’ll be talking about every game I’ve ever worked on in my 8 or so years in the industry… and getting everyone to do some papercraft. Everybody loves papercraft.”

Mike Bithell replied,

“As the creator of the second most exciting rectangle based game to be released in early 2012 (after Andrew’s probably-going-to-be-awesome Smash The Block) I’m massively excited to be taking part. GameCity is doing awesome work to put the culture of gaming and game making on the map, and I’m humbled to be taking part. I’ll be showing off a nearly done build of the game, talking about Motion Capture april fool’s videos and how I convinced an awesome voice actor to talk about a bunch of socially awkward rectangles, and maybe showing a new trailer. If it’s done. It will probably be done.”

Our From the Desk of guest is currently under wraps, and we’ll also have indie developers showcasing their work, Owain Davies’ House Band, comedian Paul Butler’s Augmented Vision, A Winner is You prize fund, wholesome hot food and a well stocked bar will round out the night.

It’s that time of year again! Well, sort of. We’re actually revealing (some of) the festival details a lot earlier this year. Why? Because there’s soooo much happening, we need a longer than ever lead time to cram all of the announcements in between now and October! To start things off, we’re having a party! With Ian Livingstone!

On May 2nd, from 6pm, at Antenna, Nottingham, NG1 1EQ, the two Ian’s (Ian Livingstone, OBE and Iain Simons, GameCity Director, the original Odd Couple) will share the presenting honours in a frankly amazing event. The beginning of the evening will be spent honouring Livingstone, Founder and Life President at Eidos Interactive, OBE and Westminster videogame evangelist, to name a few accomplishments.

Not only will Livingstone’s myriad accomplishments be reflected upon and celebrated in GameCity’s own inimitable style, the man, the myth, the legend will also unveil the first details of GameCity’s annual festival, due to take place this October!

Covering the festival dates, locations, a select number of headliners and other currently top-secret details, as well as opportunities for public participation and publisher/developer exhibition opportunities, this is also a chance for the public to have their say about October’s celebrations.

Eidos Life President, Ian Livingstone OBE said “Having followed the development of GameCity from its humble beginnings, I’m delighted to be able to launch the 2012 GameCity festival. NTU are unique in translating the videogame industry to the broader public in radical new ways and have developed a true beacon of public engagement.”

GameCity Director and founder, Iain Simons, said, “We’re honoured and delighted to be able to welcome Ian to GameCity for the first time. Festival launch day is always an exciting event for us, but having it in the presence of one of the legends of UK development will make 2012 particularly special. I can scarcely believe that thirty years ago I was a schoolboy enthralled by ‘Deathtrap Dungeon’ and now here I am welcoming its creator to our event. He looks so very young.”

GameCityNights: GameCity7 Special!

6pm – 11pm
Antenna, Beck Street, NG1 1EQ
FREE!
18+ ID required.

Venue capacity is limited so turn up on time to guarantee entry.
