Are videogames art? Hmm…it’s a topic that’s attracted some strong opinions from either side of the argument. It’s become the Marmite debate of the industry. But everyone knows Marmite is RUBBISH and videogames ARE art.
So, with that issue taken care of, at GameCity we focus on eliciting an emotional and intellectual response from those who interact with or consume videogames. So passionately do we believe in this practice, that we’ve devoted June’s GameCityNights to it in celebration of the dedication, talent and unbridled creativity we see in the industry every day.
Headlining Episode 6 is artist and designer Chris O’Shea, known internationally for his immersive, interactive multimedia work. Using Microsoft’s Kinect, Chris will be talking us through the melding of videogames and play into contemporary art, with demonstrations of his previous and current projects.
Here are some examples of Chris’ stunning work:

Dr Sketchy’s Anti Art School will also be on hand to help people put down the game pads and pick up the art pads as they present an evening of glamourous cosplay curiosities, with videogame life drawing. Bring along traditional art supplies or a graphics tablet and sketch, scribble, doodle or draw some iconic characters. There’s going to be some special artistic tasks to complete with incredible prizes up for grabs.
King of videogame comedy Paul Butler returns with his ‘Augmented Vision’ standup routine, a fleet of indie devs premiering their latest work, some of it including the latest and most impressive Kinect hacks, cocktails, party games and prizes.
Best of all, this month’s game based competition features secret prize contributions from Brady Games and Ubisoft. More details on those to follow. Stay tuned!
